Veneer: thin sheets of wood applied to the surface of furniture for a decorative effect. Veneers first came into use after the Restoration in the 17th century. The wood was chosen for its rarity and the beauty of its markings; at this time exotic wood s like kingwood (from Brazil) ebony and amboyna were often laid on in veneers to form elaborate patterns created from the woods' natural markings.

Marquetry: a form of surface decoration closely allied to veneer but distinct from inlay. The design is first cut and fitted into a thin sheet of wood or veneer; then the veneer, complete with the design in one flat sheet is applied to the surface of the furniture. Marquetry became popular in the Restoration, when designs, inspired by the work of the Dutch, took the form of flowers and birds.
